Sky Color/Ion Current Observations

Some recent observations of relative light color components and ion current from the atmosphere have produced some interesting relationships as shown in the plots below..

The red and green sky light components (red and green traces) and the ion current (black trace) are plotted on a logarithmic scale. This plot presents an interesting pattern when the red night time component drops dramatically while the green component increases. This may be related to a strong solar flare.

Another less dramatic event and a more typical plot illustrate some unexpected results since the light monitoring was installed after reviewing the "haze monitor project". Other similar events, but less dramatic patterns, have been observed periodically. Also,a high green light level seems to be accompanied by a small temperature variation through the night. The ion current monitor was in place as part of the severe weather monitoring project. Reference schematics illustrate the technique for logarithmic measurements.

This is a rather brief description of the observation and I will be happy to go into more detail if desired. Please contact me with comments or questions.
